Dior Men Spring 2024: A Meeting of Past, Present & Future

The Fashionisto / Published June 26, 2023

Approaching Dior Men’s spring-summer 2024 collection, its artistic director, Kim Jones, reiterates, “Dior is an haute couture house: it is all about the clothes.” The newest menswear is a living testament to this core belief, with each piece communicating a distinct story.

Inspired by the house ethos, Jones affirms a central focus on “silhouette, shape, technique, and fabrication of the very highest order.” Jones, commemorating his fifth year and collection at Dior Men, honors the past and shapes the future with this collection.

Indeed, this anniversary collection presents an intricate collage of Dior’s legacy. A range of influences from various Dior predecessors, such as Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic silhouettes, Gianfranco Ferré’s exquisite embroideries, Marc Bohan’s remarkable textures, and Monsieur Dior’s enduring cabochons, are beautifully woven into the collection. The timeless and the contemporary meet in a unique fusion that Jones describes as “a culture we have inherited from womenswear past and applied to menswear present.”

Further enriching the collection is a tribute to Dior’s classic elements, notably the cannage. As Jones reveals, “And for the first time in our collections, it is a collage of influences from different Dior predecessors and eras we wanted to pay tribute to at once—together with some of our own. All are connected through texture and technique alongside some of the Dior pop icons, particularly the cannage.”

The spring-summer 2024 collection explores styles from various epochs, creating a ‘mechanical garden of hommes fleurs.’ The collection takes us on a sartorial journey from the salon to the street, from the New Look to the New Wave. Traditional British tailoring merges with haute couture tailleur, underlining the interconnected origins of menswear and womenswear.

Yves Saint Laurent’s 1959 collections exert a significant influence, leaving their imprint in volumes, vents, pleats, and necklines. These elements are masterfully transposed into relaxed masculine suiting, summer ensembles, and sweeping coats. A sense of playful modernity, practicality, and ease marks the collection.

The footwear design takes a page from the 1995’s Lady Dior bag, incorporating a new circular logo into heavy-soled loafers and slides. The assortment of bags is diverse, featuring pieces in various shapes, colors, and textures, ranging from pop fluorescent Saddles to cognac cannage satchels and utilitarian tweed rucksacks.

Stephen Jones lends his creative vision to reinterpret New Wave beanies, replacing the traditional cockade with ‘Ronghua,’ exquisite velvet flowers produced in China since the Tang dynasty. This incredible detail further accentuates the global influence of the collection.

In the Dior Men’s spring-summer 2024 collection, Kim Jones weaves a rich narrative of past, present, and future, exhibiting a timeless fusion of influences and celebrating the enduring elegance of Dior.
